In June/July 2011 CSTI facilitated a four day training workshop for members of regional mountaineering clubs Piva Mountaineering Club, Durmitor Mountaineering Club, and Dzambas Mountaineering Club. The primary focus of this intensive training was to ensure the proper marking and signposting of mountaineering trails in the Via Dinarica region and to equip individuals with certificates validating their qualifications to carry out such activities. By the end of the workshop 8 members of these mountaineering clubs were awarded certificates for marking and signposting. The CSTI team also benefitted from this workshop by learning about national regulations for marking and signposting, enabling us to more efficiently monitor trail marking in the future. CSTI anticipates that provision of this training will help to ensure the success and long term continuation of the Via Dinarica project by equipping local mountaineering guides with important practical skills with which they will properly maintain the trail.
During many days of rigorous field work throughout the Summer and Fall 2011, CSTI representatives joined hands with local mountaineering clubs to install missing signs and trail markers and to assess needs for further improvement of the Via Dinarica trail in northern Montenegro. We also collected important GPS tracking information, photographs, and other data which will be used in development of the final Via Dinarica product, guidebook, and website. Expected completion of this project is February 2013.
